A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck Sikkim’s Mangan district in the early hours of Tuesday, September 1, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor was recorded at 1.48 am IST at a depth of 7 km, with the epicentre located at 27.638°N latitude and 88.766°E longitude.
The earthquake occurred as neighbouring Nepal continued to grapple with devastating flash floods that have killed 903 people and left 4,247 others missing, according to the latest figures released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
The floods have also prompted large-scale rescue operations, with 10,451 people rescued so far. The Nepal Army has carried out aerial rescues of 252 foreign nationals and 3,344 Nepali citizens.
