APCC Leader Sanju Boruah Resigns from Congress Citing Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi Ahead of Assam Polls

Guwahati, Feb 11: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) member Sanju Boruah has resigned from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress, citing allegations levelled against state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi. The resignation comes months before the Assam Assembly elections scheduled later this year.

Boruah, who served as Vice Chairman of the Assam Congress Campaign Committee 2026 and held responsibilities as Senior Spokesperson and Executive Member of the APCC, submitted his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on February 9. In his letter, he stated that the decision was taken after “serious deliberation and moral introspection” and not out of haste or emotion.

Expressing concern over allegations linking Gogoi’s name with a Pakistani national, Boruah described the matter as one of grave national importance. He wrote that continuing under the present leadership would amount to compromising his principles. “With a deeply troubled conscience and an acute sense of responsibility towards the nation, I hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect,” he said, adding that remaining silent in the face of such concerns was not an option for him.

Boruah further alleged that there was a persistent disconnect with ground realities under the current APCC leadership, along with indifference towards public issues and disregard for organisational discipline and the party constitution. While acknowledging that the decision caused him personal pain, he maintained that national interest must take precedence over party considerations and said he no longer believed the party was ideologically, morally or organisationally secure under its present leadership in the state.

The resignation follows claims made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who recently released findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe alleging links involving Gaurav Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, and a Pakistani national. Gogoi has denied the allegations and on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking suo motu cognisance against the Chief Minister for allegedly disclosing details of his children to the media. He has maintained that no evidence has been produced to substantiate the claims.

The political development adds to the charged atmosphere in Assam as the state prepares for Assembly elections later this year.
