Assam CM Challenges Congress to File Affidavit on Alleged Land Holdings

Guwahati, Feb 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 11 urged Congress leaders to submit a sworn affidavit in court detailing the properties they claim he owns illegally. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma challenged the party to provide evidence supporting their allegations of “12,000 bighas” of purportedly illegal land, calling their public statements baseless.

The Chief Minister said he had “helped” the Congress by filing a defamation case, framing it as an opportunity for the party to formally present their claims before the court. “If they have proof, they should file an affidavit with the complete list of my alleged land ownership in court,” Sarma stated, warning that failure to substantiate the allegations could lead to the Rs 500 crore defamation suit moving forward.

Sarma emphasised that the matter should now be resolved through legal channels rather than political rhetoric, reflecting a heightened confrontation between the BJP and the Congress over the contentious land encroachment claims.
