ADTU Suspends Five Students Over Alleged Sexual Assault Case

Guwahati: Assam Down Town University (ADTU) has suspended five students after receiving complaints about their alleged involvement in unlawful activities, including the reported sexual assault of a girl from Tripura. The suspension, which came into effect on September 17, bars the accused from attending classes or participating in any academic and non-academic activities under the university’s banner until further notice.

In its notification, the university said disciplinary proceedings would be initiated once the police administration submits a charge sheet in connection with the case. The accused students have been identified as belonging to the Diploma in Pharmacy, B.Tech Civil Engineering, and B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) courses. Authorities maintained that the action was necessary to preserve discipline and uphold institutional standards while awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.

The incident has shocked the university community after reports surfaced that the five students had allegedly sexually assaulted a girl from Tripura. A video showing a group of students confronting the accused also went viral on social media, drawing widespread outrage.

Reacting to the case, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Manikya Debbarma said he had personally spoken to the victim and extended support. Urging restraint, he appealed to the public and media to avoid speculation and ensure that the survivor’s identity is not revealed. He added that he would stand with the victim to ensure she receives justice.

Police investigations are ongoing, and further developments are awaited.
