Manik Saha Highlights Crime Drop, Tech Push to Eradicate Cannabis in Tripura

Agartala, Feb 25: Manik Saha on February 25 said the Tripura government is leveraging advanced technology to eradicate cannabis cultivation and reported a significant decline in the state’s overall crime rate in 2025.

Addressing the Tripura Police Week parade at AD Nagar in Agartala, Saha said the event honours the service and sacrifices of police personnel. Emphasising the evolving nature of crime, he stated that criminals are adopting new techniques and that the police must respond by embracing advanced technology. He added that proposals for specialised training programmes had been received and assured full government support.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the overall crime rate in 2025 declined by 8.20% compared to 2024. He noted that 4,033 cases were registered in 2024, while 3,698 cases have been recorded this year. Property-related offences fell by nearly 16%, and crimes against the body declined by around 14.54%.

Highlighting crimes against women as a key law and order indicator, Saha said such cases decreased by 8.1% this year. He informed that 24×7 women’s help desks have been established in every police station and that nine all-women police stations—one in each district—are now operational.

On road safety, he said that under the Zero Accident Programme, 16 black spots and 84 accident-prone zones have been identified, with interceptor vehicles deployed across districts. Road accidents declined by 8.82% in 2025 compared to 2024, while fatalities dropped by 13%.

Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance against drug abuse, Saha said intensified enforcement led to an 11.06% rise in NDPS cases. Cannabis seizures increased by 14.4%, cough syrup seizures by 145.73%, and tablet seizures by 26.37%.

He added that technology is being used to identify and destroy cannabis plantations. According to him, cannabis plant destruction rose by 94.71% this year, while seizure and destruction operations increased by 92.70%, with an estimated market value of ₹1,641.89 crore.

On cross-border crime, Saha said Tripura Police acts as the second line of defence and that in 2025, 576 illegal infiltrators and 102 touts were arrested. He also directed the modernisation of the cyber police station to strengthen efforts against cybercrime.
