Women’s World Cup 2025 Opener to Begin with Tribute to Late Singer Zubeen Garg

Guwahati: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a special 40-minute tribute to legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg ahead of the opening match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on September 30.

The tribute, organized in collaboration with the Assam Cricket Association, will precede India’s opening clash against Sri Lanka.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the programme, calling it a heartfelt gesture from the cricketing fraternity. “Given the grief in Assam, we felt it was important to pay tribute to Zubeen. The 40-minute segment will be the cricket community’s heartfelt tribute to him,” Saikia said.

Notably, singer Shreya Ghoshal, who was already slated to perform at the opening ceremony, will now be part of the tribute. While other cultural performances were initially considered, Saikia clarified that the entire segment would be dedicated solely to honoring Zubeen Garg’s legacy.

The announcement comes amid a wave of mourning across Assam and beyond following Zubeen Garg’s sudden demise earlier this week. The singer, often hailed as the cultural heartbeat of Assam, passed away after suffering a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island in Singapore. His mortal remains were flown back to Guwahati on Sunday, where thousands of fans gathered to bid him a tearful farewell.
