Aizawl (Mizoram), March 10: Lalbiakzama, Speaker of the Mizoram Assembly, called on all MLAs to uphold the dignity of the House and maintain decorum during proceedings.
The appeal follows recent heated exchanges between members of the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and opposition parties over issues including a proposed land deal with the Indian Air Force for a base near Lengpui airport.
Addressing the House before Question Hour in the ongoing budget session, Lalbiakzama reminded members that the Assembly’s reputation is often cited as a benchmark for legislative excellence among Indian states. He stressed that while MLAs enjoy rights and privileges, these are inseparable from their responsibilities.
“Reckless or disorderly behaviour undermines both the institution and the public it represents,” he said, urging members to respect their duties and preserve the Assembly’s legacy as one of the country’s most “outstanding” legislative bodies.
The Speaker’s remarks highlight the importance of parliamentary conduct, especially during debates on sensitive issues.
