Nagaland urges electrical manufacturers to explore Northeast and cross-border markets

Nagaland Power Minister KG Kenye has urged electrical and electronics manufacturers to invest in the Northeast and explore cross-border business opportunities, highlighting the region’s potential to connect businesses with untapped markets in neighbouring countries.

Speaking at an ELECRAMA 2027 preview programme organised by the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA) in Kohima on November 3, Kenye called on manufacturers to look beyond Kolkata and capitalise on the region’s economic potential under India’s Act East policy and improving connectivity.

He said areas across international borders had limited electricity infrastructure but offered significant scope for business expansion amid rising consumer demand. He also encouraged companies to use Nagaland as a base for expanding into neighbouring regions, citing improved road links and international highways as potential drivers of growth.

Kenye urged industry leaders to invest in the state and create jobs, noting that the government had reached its capacity to absorb educated youth into public service. He said a substantial share of the state’s financial resources went towards government salaries and wages, leaving limited funds for other development activities.

Acknowledging the challenges of establishing industries in Nagaland, he said the government was working to create a peaceful and investment-friendly environment and assured manufacturers of all possible support.

Power Department Principal Secretary KD Vizo also called on manufacturers to establish production, assembly and repair facilities in Nagaland and other northeastern states. He said the region had lagged behind in manufacturing and urged companies to consider semi-knocked-down assembly units if full-scale manufacturing facilities were not immediately viable.

Vizo said manufacturing could help tackle unemployment and generate opportunities for the younger generation.

Established in 1948, IEEMA is India’s apex association representing manufacturers of electrical and industrial electronics equipment.
