Mizoram Urges Voluntary Compliance with Fireworks Law Ahead of Christmas

The Mizoram government has called for public cooperation and voluntary compliance with the Mizoram Fireworks Regulation Act, 2026, ahead of the Christmas season, stressing the need to raise awareness about the harmful effects of fireworks alongside enforcement.

Home Minister K Sapdanga chaired a meeting in Aizawl on November 3 to discuss the implementation of the new legislation. Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, DGP Sharad Agarwal, senior government officials and representatives of the Central Young Mizo Association (YMA), Aizawl Municipal Corporation and Mizoram Merchants Association attended the meeting.

Sapdanga said enforcement alone would not be enough to regulate fireworks and emphasised educating the public to encourage voluntary compliance. He called for coordinated efforts involving the government, churches, local communities and voluntary organisations, highlighting the YMA’s role in maintaining a peaceful, clean and healthy environment.

Home Secretary Vanlalmawia outlined the Act’s provisions governing the use, possession and sale of fireworks, along with penalties for violations. The legislation also provides for the formation of a High-Level Committee, District Supervisory Committees and Local Supervisory Committees to oversee its implementation.

The meeting discussed expanding awareness campaigns through the media, churches and community leaders. Officials also explored working with the Mizoram Merchants Association to prevent fireworks from entering the state ahead of Christmas and encourage people to voluntarily refrain from using them.
