Guwahati, March 10: Former Member of Parliament and Union Minister Biren Sing Engti passed away at 7:45 AM on Tuesday at a private hospital in Guwahati, marking a significant loss for the tribal communities of Assam’s hill districts and the state’s political landscape. He was 80.
Born on March 2, 1945, in Karbi Anglong, Engti was a prominent political figure who represented the Autonomous District (ST) constituency in the Lok Sabha several times during his long political career. Over the decades, he earned recognition for his dedication to public service and his continued efforts toward the political and social development of tribal communities, particularly in Assam’s hill districts.
Expressing his grief, Assam Cabinet Minister Ranoj Pegu said he was deeply saddened by the demise of the veteran leader. Pegu noted that Engti had devoted his life to serving the people and worked tirelessly for the welfare and advancement of communities in the hill regions of the state.
Political leaders and colleagues remembered Engti for his experience, commitment and influence in Assam’s political sphere. They said his leadership and guidance played a key role in shaping initiatives aimed at improving the lives of tribal communities, leaving behind a legacy of public service and dedication.
