North Lakhimpur: At least six houses were completely gutted in a major fire that broke out at Khelmati on Monday afternoon, causing extensive property damage. The incident occurred near North Lakhimpur University at the residence of Farukh Rahman. According to local residents, the fire was triggered by an LPG cylinder blast, which quickly spread through the densely populated locality under the Khelmati Police Outpost. As the flames spread to nearby houses, three more LPG cylinders exploded, further intensifying the blaze and making firefighting efforts more challenging. The fire destroyed six houses and caused damage to properties reportedly worth crores of rupees.

Fire and emergency services rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control after several hours of operation. On Tuesday, the Lakhimpur District Administration distributed relief materials, including food items, essential commodities and bedding sheets for temporary shelter to the affected families. The Manab Deka along with the district commissioner also visited the affected area to assess the damage and assured all possible assistance to the families who lost their homes in the incident.
