Karbi Anglong, March 12: A severe storm that swept through Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday night caused major disruption after a large roadside hoarding collapsed onto National Highway 29, blocking traffic for several hours.
Strong winds brought down the massive structure erected along the highway, causing it to fall directly onto the road and obstruct vehicular movement. The sudden collapse created chaos in the area and resulted in a severe traffic jam along the busy highway stretch.
The situation was further aggravated as a large number of vehicles were returning from Diphu, where Himanta Biswa Sarma had addressed a public gathering earlier in the day. Many people travelling back via NH-29 were caught in the congestion, leading to a long line of stranded vehicles.
Local police and authorities rushed to the site after receiving information about the incident. Personnel worked to control the traffic situation while arrangements were made to remove the fallen hoarding and clear the roadway.
For a considerable period, vehicular movement along NH-29 in the Dokmoka area came almost to a standstill, causing inconvenience to commuters.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident, though the collapse has once again raised concerns about the safety and stability of roadside structures during severe weather conditions.
