Assam Governor Attends 24th Convocation of Dibrugarh University

Guwahati: Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Assam and Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, attended the 24th Convocation Ceremony of the university held at Dibrugarh on Thursday. Addressing the graduating students, the Governor described the convocation as a celebration of dedication, perseverance and academic achievement. He also congratulated noted surgeon Dr. Sarbeswar Bhuyan, who was conferred the honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree, and eminent poet and writer Mamang Dai, who received the honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree for their outstanding contributions to society and literature.

Emphasising the broader purpose of education, Acharya said that true learning goes beyond acquiring knowledge and helps build character and values. Referring to the ancient Indian ideal “Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye,” he said that education liberates individuals from ignorance and prepares them to contribute to society and nation-building. Highlighting India’s rapid transformation driven by innovation, science and technology, the Governor noted that the country is moving towards the vision of a developed nation by 2047. He urged the youth to play a proactive role in shaping the future, especially in an era defined by artificial intelligence, digital transformation and automation.

Acharya also praised the role of Dibrugarh, often known as the “Tea City of India,” and compared the nurturing of tea gardens with the university’s role in shaping generations of students who contribute to society in diverse fields. According to university authorities, 12,266 students had applied for the convocation, of whom 1,971 received their degrees during the ceremony. A total of 126 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees and 42 students received gold medals for academic excellence. The event was attended by Vice-Chancellor Jiten Hazarika, Registrar Dr. Parmananda Sonowal, faculty members, students and other dignitaries.
