AIUDF Signals Limited Seat Strategy, Open to Post-Poll Anti-BJP Alliance in Assam

Guwahati, March 15: The All India United Democratic Front has indicated that it may contest a limited number of seats in the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections while extending support to a broader anti-BJP front after the polls.

AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam said the party is currently preparing to contest between 28 and 32 Assembly constituencies, with a final decision expected within the next two to four days.

Speaking about the party’s strategy, Islam said the AIUDF’s primary objective is to counter the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam.

“Our fight is against the BJP. We will support the anti-BJP forces in the election,” he said, adding that although the party has the organisational strength to contest more than 100 seats, it has deliberately chosen to limit its participation.

According to the AIUDF leader, contesting too many constituencies could split opposition votes and inadvertently benefit the BJP. The party therefore plans to adopt a more strategic approach by contesting fewer seats.

Islam further clarified that the AIUDF will not enter into any formal pre-poll alliance with other political parties. Instead, it plans to contest the elections independently following the “Ekla Cholo” strategy, which emphasises fighting the electoral battle alone while leaving room for post-poll cooperation.

Despite ruling out pre-poll alliances, he said the party remains committed to the larger objective of forming a secular, anti-BJP government in Assam.

“We want all anti-BJP secular parties to come together and form a government. If such a government is formed, we will support it unconditionally,” he added.
