Amit Shah Inaugurates Medical College, Two Cancer Centres in Assam

Guwahati, March 15: Amit Shah on March 15 inaugurated a series of major healthcare facilities in Assam, including the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital, the Golaghat Cancer Centre, and the Tinsukia Cancer Centre, marking a significant step toward strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

Addressing the gathering, Shah praised the efforts of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that the state government has made notable progress toward making Assam self-sufficient in the healthcare sector.

“I want to praise Himanta Biswa Sarma’s efforts to make Assam a complete state in the health sector in a single day. He has made Assam self-sufficient in the health sector even before the end of his term,” Shah said.

The Union Home Minister said that during their journey earlier in the day, Sarma had shared his vision of building a healthcare ecosystem where patients from the state would no longer need to travel outside for treatment.

According to Shah, the state government aims to ensure that even patients from neighbouring regions can access quality medical services in Assam.

“He told me that he wants to make Assam such that not a single patient has to go outside the state to seek treatment. We want to create a state where poor patients from Bengal and across the Northeast can come here and receive treatment,” Shah added.

Highlighting the importance of the newly inaugurated institutions, Shah noted that many patients from Assam and other northeastern states previously had to travel long distances to cities such as Chennai, Mumbai, Karnataka, and New Delhi for specialised treatment, particularly for cancer care.

“With the establishment of these institutions, patients who once travelled far from their families for treatment will now be able to receive care in government hospitals closer to home,” he said.

The newly inaugurated medical college and cancer centres are expected to improve access to specialised healthcare services, especially oncology treatment, while reducing the financial and logistical burden on patients from Assam and neighbouring states.
