Himanta Biswa Sarma invites Pradyut Bordoloi to join BJP, offers Assembly ticket

Guwahati: Amid intensifying political speculation in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday publicly invited Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the party would welcome him and ensure an opportunity to contest the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters, Sarma clarified that he has not personally reached out to Bordoloi but believes the Congress leader may no longer find it necessary to remain in the Indian National Congress.

“I have not contacted Pradyut Bordoloi, but I feel he does not have the requirement to stay back in Congress. I advise him to join the BJP and I welcome him,” the Chief Minister said, adding that there has been no communication from Bordoloi so far. Sarma further assured that Bordoloi would be accorded due respect within the BJP, drawing a comparison with Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah. “The way we gave respect to Bhupen Borah, the same way we will give respect to Pradyut Bordoloi,” he said.

Significantly, the Chief Minister also indicated electoral accommodation, stating that the BJP would be ready to offer Bordoloi a seat if he joins the party. The remarks have sparked fresh political buzz across the state, particularly within Congress circles, as Assam gradually heads towards the next Assembly election cycle.
