Agartala, March 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated Jahar Chakraborty, North Tripura district vice president, as its candidate for the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election scheduled for April 9.
The 56-Dharmanagar seat fell vacant following the demise of MLA and Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen. Chakraborty is the husband of BJP leader Barnali Goswami, a former Chairperson of the Tripura State Commission for Women, and is a resident of Dharmanagar in North Tripura district.
As part of election preparedness, a high-level review meeting was convened involving the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. Following the meeting, officials inspected the EVM strong room at Dharmanagar Government Girls’ Secondary School.
The meeting was attended by Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Pandey, Additional CEO Usa Jan Mog, Police Observer S. Siteesh Bino, Additional Director General of Police G S Rao, North District Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai, District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, Returning Officer Debjani Chowdhury, along with other senior officials.
Speaking after the review, Pandey said the administration is focused on ensuring a smooth, free and fair election. He stated that comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place across polling stations, with the Central Armed Police Forces working in coordination with state police. Law-and-order measures, including intensified naka checking and strengthened border surveillance, have also been reviewed to facilitate a peaceful voting process.
