Guwahati, March 19: Former Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi on March 19 set out his priorities for Assam after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, placing job creation and improved living standards at the centre of his campaign for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections 2026.
Now contesting from Dispur as a BJP candidate, Bordoloi praised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and indicated that he would work in alignment with the state leadership to drive development across Assam and the wider North-East. He described Sarma as an “accomplished and hardworking” leader and said his efforts would be directed towards advancing growth and raising the standard of living.
Emphasising economic priorities, Bordoloi said employment generation and income enhancement would be key focus areas. He stated that creating jobs and expanding income opportunities would remain central to his political agenda in the run-up to the elections.
The BJP has already announced its first list of 88 candidates, fielding Bordoloi from Dispur while Sarma will seek re-election from Jalukbari. The political shift has also triggered developments within the Indian National Congress, with Bordoloi’s son Prateek Bordoloi withdrawing his candidature from the Margherita constituency.
In a letter to party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek Bordoloi said his decision was aimed at avoiding confusion among voters and ensuring clarity regarding his political commitment.
Assam is set to vote in a single phase on April 9 for all 126 Assembly constituencies, with counting scheduled for May 4, as per the Election Commission of India.
