BJP Fields Pradyut Bordoloi in Dispur After Lok Sabha Resignation Accepted by Om Birla

Guwahati, March 24: Om Birla has accepted the resignation of Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi, formally ending his tenure in the Lok Sabha days after his switch from the Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Assembly elections.

The resignation came into effect from March 20, according to official communication. Bordoloi had stepped down from the Congress on March 17 and joined the BJP the following day, marking a notable shift in Assam’s political landscape in the run-up to the polls.

Soon after his induction, the BJP named Bordoloi as its candidate from the high-profile Dispur constituency as part of its first list of nominees. The seat, which houses Assam’s administrative headquarters, is expected to witness a closely contested battle.

Reacting to his candidature, Bordoloi said he had joined the BJP without seeking any position, adding that his primary objective was to find a platform where he could contribute more meaningfully to public life. He emphasised that his decision was guided by the scope for greater engagement rather than personal gain.

Bordoloi also highlighted his long political career, noting that he has been elected as a legislator four times and served as a minister for nearly 15 years under the leadership of Tarun Gogoi. He later went on to represent the Nagaon constituency in the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms.

Referring to his past association with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bordoloi said he would welcome the opportunity to work together again, recalling their earlier collaboration in government which he described as effective in addressing development and insurgency-related challenges.

On his electoral prospects, Bordoloi said he would approach voters in Dispur with humility and seek their trust. He added that job creation and improving living standards would form the core of his campaign, aligning with the broader development agenda of the state government.

Elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4, as notified by the Election Commission of India.
