Gunfight Erupts in Manipur’s Bishnupur, Security Forces Repel Attack in 30-Minute Exchange

Imphal, March 26: A late-night gunfight broke out between security forces and suspected militants in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, lasting around 30 minutes, officials said on March 26.

According to a police statement, the exchange of fire began at approximately 11:40 pm on Wednesday when suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire towards an Indian Army post in the Phouljang/Gothol area, targeting a position in Phougakchao Awang Leikai.

Personnel from the Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58th Battalion), deployed in the area, responded immediately by returning fire towards the source. The exchange continued for nearly half an hour before subsiding.

No casualties have been reported so far.

Following the incident, a joint search operation was launched involving the Army, CRPF, state police and the Indian Reserve Battalion. Security forces have been conducting combing operations in the area where the firing occurred, as well as in adjoining hill regions.

Officials stated that the situation remains under close watch, with security personnel maintaining a strong presence in the surrounding areas as operations continue.

Authorities have also appealed to residents to refrain from spreading unverified information and urged the public to maintain calm while security measures remain in place.
