CHERRAPUNJI, Aug. 11: The seven-day Gandhi Shilp Bazaar opened at Eco Park in Cherrapunji on Tuesday, showcasing handicrafts, handlooms and traditional products from across Northeast India.
The event, which will continue until August 17, is sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicraft), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and organised by MARCOFED, Dimapur, Nagaland.
The inaugural programme featured ceremonial lamp lighting, addresses by dignitaries, interaction with artisans, media and visitors, and a tour of stalls displaying North Eastern GI handicraft products.
The Bazaar will feature handicraft and handloom exhibitions, live product demonstrations, traditional craft promotion, artisan-visitor interaction, buyer-artisan engagement and sales promotion throughout the week.
A special programme has also been scheduled for Independence Day, along with cultural and traditional presentations.
The event provides artisans with an opportunity to showcase their skills and products directly to visitors and buyers while promoting traditional craftsmanship and indigenous products of the Northeast.
Organisers said the Bazaar would help increase public engagement with traditional handicrafts and provide artisans with opportunities for direct sales and wider market outreach.
The event will conclude on August 17 with sales promotion, artisan interaction, public outreach, a valedictory programme and felicitation.
