ACMS Slams Alleged Derogatory Remarks, Warns of Legal Action

Dibrugarh/Guwahati: The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the state’s largest trade union representing tea garden workers, has strongly condemned alleged derogatory remarks made on social media by a Congress worker, warning of legal action. Hari Nanda Gorh, secretary of the ACMS Margherita branch, said the comments posted by Chitran Deka on Facebook had hurt the sentiments of tea garden communities and could create tensions among different groups. Terming the remarks “unfortunate,” Gorh also criticised the Congress, alleging that the party had neglected tea garden workers during its years in power.

He claimed that significant welfare initiatives for the community were introduced only after Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014 and the BJP came to power in Assam in 2016. These, he said, included land pattas, wage hikes, improved educational infrastructure, and employment opportunities. According to ACMS leaders, the controversial post has triggered resentment within tea garden areas, raising concerns about possible unrest if such issues are not addressed promptly.

The union has decided to lodge an FIR against Deka over the alleged offensive statements and urged political parties and individuals to exercise restraint while making public remarks. ACMS emphasised the need to maintain social harmony and avoid statements that could disturb peace in the state.
