Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has expressed solidarity with Assam following the devastating floods in the state, which have claimed 103 lives so far.
In a letter dated August 3 to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Bhutanese monarch conveyed condolences to families who lost loved ones and homes in the floods. He said the people of Bhutan joined him in offering prayers for those who died.
Wangchuck also pointed to the growing frequency and severity of natural disasters linked to climate change, saying the crisis highlighted challenges that countries across the region needed to face collectively.
The Bhutanese King praised Sarma’s leadership during the crisis, describing his strength and resolve in overseeing the state’s response despite the loss and damage as admirable.
He reaffirmed Bhutan’s “full solidarity” with the people of Assam and extended the country’s support and friendship as the state continued relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts.
