Himanta Biswa Sarma Projects ‘Historic’ BJP Win in Assam, Intensifies Attack on Opposition

Guwahati, March 27: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections, projecting a decisive victory backed by what he described as widespread public support and organisational strength.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma cited the response to the party’s outreach efforts, particularly the Vijay Sankalp Yatra, stating that large numbers of people participated and extended their support. He said the BJP is expecting a “historic result” in the polls.

The Chief Minister also escalated his criticism of political opponents, targeting Badruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front. In a sharp remark, Sarma claimed that the BJP has significantly weakened what he termed as “enemies of Assam” and suggested that further political consolidation would follow.

A day earlier, Sarma had asserted that Assam has witnessed a “complete turnaround” under BJP governance, adding that the party enjoys support across indigenous communities. He said the state is moving towards a “new Assam” rooted in cultural identity and heritage.

He further alleged that support for the BJP is widespread, except among what he described as “Bangladeshi infiltrators”, and claimed that indigenous voters would not back the Congress. In another pointed statement, he criticised the Congress’s national prospects, questioning its ability to form a government.

The remarks come amid intensifying political exchanges ahead of the high-stakes election, where the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance is set to face the Indian National Congress in the contest for control of the 126-member Assembly.

Sarma, who is contesting from the Jalukbari constituency, is aiming to lead the BJP to a third consecutive term in Assam, while the Congress is seeking to return to power after years in opposition.

Polling for all 126 constituencies will be held on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4, as per the Election Commission of India.
