Meghalaya Wins First Medals at Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, CM Conrad Sangma Hails Historic Achievement

Shillong, March 28: Conrad K Sangma on March 27 congratulated athletes from the state for securing their first medals at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, describing the achievement as a landmark moment for Meghalaya’s presence in national-level sports.

Larityngkai Lawriniang opened the medal tally for the state by clinching a bronze in the 53 kg weightlifting category, emerging as Meghalaya’s first medallist at the event. Highlighting her journey, Sangma noted her association with the STAR Elite Pathway Programme and commended her commitment and perseverance, calling the medal a reflection of sustained hard work.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the performance of Verem G. Syiemlieh, who secured another bronze medal, adding to the state’s growing list of achievements. He described her accomplishment as a proud moment, noting that her performance marks a significant milestone for Meghalaya in national-level competitions.

Sangma praised both athletes along with their coaches, stating that their success underlines the state’s emerging strength in sports. He emphasised that such achievements signal Meghalaya’s rising potential and growing competitiveness on the national stage.
