AJYCP Raises Concerns Over Proposed Medical College in Bajali

Bajali: The Assam Jatiyabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) expressed concern over Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s announcement of setting up a medical college in Bajali, highlighting gaps in the region’s existing healthcare infrastructure. The organisation stressed that the Swahid Madan Rauta Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital should first be upgraded to a full-fledged district hospital to ensure better healthcare services for local residents.

Reacting to the announcement made during an election campaign, AJYCP pointed out that Bajali Civil Hospital currently lacks critical care facilities such as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and CT scan services. It said patients are still forced to travel to other districts for advanced treatment. “We welcome the proposal for a medical college in Bajali. However, the existing hospital does not even have an ICU. Strengthening basic healthcare infrastructure should be the priority,” said AJYCP General Secretary Bijan Bayan.

The organisation termed the proposal “premature” and questioned its feasibility without adequate infrastructure, manpower, and planning. It also noted that such announcements are often made during election periods and urged authorities to address immediate healthcare needs alongside long-term development goals.

The Chief Minister had recently announced that a medical college would be established in Bajali if the NDA returns to power. The issue has triggered wider debate on the state of healthcare in the district, with focus now on whether urgent gaps will be addressed before undertaking large-scale projects.
