Mary Kom Joins ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ Campaign, Promotes Fitness Through Community Cycling

Sports, March 29: Olympic medallist Mary Kom participated in the nationwide ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ initiative, reinforcing efforts to promote healthier lifestyles through community-driven physical activity.

Speaking at the event, Mary Kom expressed appreciation for the organisers and highlighted the importance of fitness in everyday life. Referring to the broader Fit India Movement, she emphasised the need for regular exercise and encouraged people to adopt simple practices such as cycling to maintain their well-being.

She also reflected on her early life, noting that the initiative brought back memories of her childhood when cycling was an integral part of her daily routine. Stressing its value, she said such activities are essential for sustaining physical health.

The weekly programme is jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India, in collaboration with various sports bodies and fitness groups. It is held simultaneously across states and union territories, spanning training centres and grassroots-level sports hubs.

Launched in December 2024 under the guidance of Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the campaign has witnessed increasing public participation, with officials noting that lakhs of citizens now join the initiative every week at thousands of locations nationwide.

The drive aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader push to integrate fitness into daily routines, while also addressing concerns such as rising obesity and environmental challenges.
