Dhemaji: Highlighting the growing role of women in Assam’s political landscape, former Union minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday said women are now at the centre of the state’s development narrative and electoral decision-making. Addressing a campaign rally in Sissiborgaon in support of BJP candidate Jibon Gogoi, Irani said Assam has witnessed steady growth over the past decade, with women emerging as key participants in the democratic process. “Earlier, women voted as directed by their husbands; today, they are influencing voting decisions themselves,” she remarked.

Referring to the proposed 33% reservation for women, Irani credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for empowering women politically and socially. Expanding her address, Irani said the upcoming elections were about broader national concerns, including tackling illegal infiltration. She accused the Indian National Congress of shielding illegal migrants and questioned its stance on electoral roll revisions.
Invoking past incidents such as the 2004 Dhemaji blast, she contrasted it with the present security situation, asserting that people can now live without fear due to government initiatives. She also highlighted measures against illegal encroachment, claiming that over 1.65 lakh bighas of land have been cleared. Irani further spoke about welfare initiatives for farmers and youth, urging voters to continue supporting the BJP-led alliance to sustain development in Assam.
