Polling Teams Brave Rain to Deliver Home Voting Across Kamrup

Guwahati: Defying heavy rain and difficult terrain, polling teams in Kamrup district ensured that elderly and specially-abled voters could exercise their democratic rights from the safety of their homes. A total of 31 polling teams were deployed across all six Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) as part of the home voting initiative introduced by the Election Commission of India. The facility, provided under the Representation of the People Act, allows voters above 85 years of age and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) to cast their votes through postal ballots.

Despite persistent rainfall, muddy roads, and disrupted access routes, polling officials carried ballot materials door-to-door, ensuring that no eligible voter was left behind. Officials described the exercise as challenging but deeply fulfilling. Among the voters was 109-year-old Soromoti Mahanta from the Palashbari constituency, who expressed happiness at being able to participate in the electoral process. Several other elderly voters, including centenarians, also availed themselves of the home voting facility.

Polling personnel said the initiative reflects a commitment to inclusive and accessible elections, particularly for those who may otherwise face difficulties in reaching polling stations. The district is scheduled to go to the polls on April 9 for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with counting of votes set for May 4. Authorities have reiterated their preparedness to ensure smooth and fair polling across all constituencies.
