Protest Erupts at AJP Rally in Guwahati Amid Beef Row Linked to Candidate Kunki Chowdhury

Guwahati, April 4: Tensions surfaced at a campaign rally of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury in Guwahati after a group of youths allegedly staged a protest over a controversy surrounding social media posts linked to her family.

According to reports, the protesters objected to visuals purportedly showing the consumption of beef, claiming that the content hurt religious sentiments. The controversy had earlier gained traction after Assam minister Pijush Hazarika circulated the visuals, intensifying the political dispute.

The issue escalated further after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly questioned posts attributed to Chowdhury’s mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury. He alleged that the images and remarks were offensive to Hindu sentiments and inconsistent with the cultural sensitivities of the state, also linking them to broader political concerns.

Chowdhury, however, strongly denied the allegations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. She asserted that the controversy was an attempt to damage her reputation amid growing public support for her candidacy in Guwahati Central.

The dispute, which began as an online controversy, has now spilled onto the ground, with the protest at her rally marking a visible escalation in the ongoing election campaign.
