Guwahati, April 4: Gilbertson Sangma, a former international footballer widely regarded as the “golden boy of Assam football,” passed away on April 4 at his residence in Kahilipara, Guwahati. He was 72 and had been battling a prolonged illness.
His demise marks a significant loss for the sporting community, particularly in Assam, where he was celebrated for his skill, leadership and long-standing contribution to the game. Known for inspiring generations of young footballers, Sangma remained a respected figure in Indian football.
Born in Dibrugarh in 1954, Sangma developed an early passion for the sport after watching prominent players of his time. His professional journey began in 1971 when he joined the Assam Police, where he trained alongside his idols at Dergaon. By 1972, he had become a regular member of the Assam Police football team.
Over a career spanning 17 years from 1971 to 1987, Sangma played in major tournaments across the country, earning recognition for his consistent performances and goal-scoring ability. He also captained the Assam team in the Santosh Trophy and represented India at the international level in 1975.
His passing has led to an outpouring of grief, with tributes expected from across the football fraternity, honouring his legacy and enduring impact on the sport in the region.
