Erosion Threat Looms Large Over Majuli Villages as Monsoon Sets In

Jorhat: With the onset of the monsoon, riverbank erosion has intensified in Majuli, triggering panic among residents as vast stretches of land continue to be swallowed by the Brahmaputra River. In Chamguri village, the situation has turned alarming, with erosion rapidly advancing towards residential areas. Villagers say they are forced to stay awake through the night, keeping vigil as their homes face the imminent threat of being washed away. A poultry farm has already been completely engulfed, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

Residents recalled that similar erosion had occurred before Bihu last year, leaving many families homeless and stripping them of their agricultural land. “The river has come dangerously close to our house, which we built just last year after assurances of protection measures,” said one affected villager. Locals have expressed frustration over the alleged lack of response from authorities. Despite repeated appeals, no officials from the concerned departments or the administration have visited the affected areas so far. Residents claim that authorities cited election duty as a reason for inaction.

The crisis has once again raised concerns over the vulnerability of Majuli—considered the heart of Sattriya culture—to recurring floods and erosion. Affected families have urged the government to take immediate steps for erosion control and provide safer rehabilitation options before the situation worsens further.
