Entertainment, April 12: India’s iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday, April 12, at the age of 92, a day after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to sources.
She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after experiencing breathing difficulties. Dr Pratit Samdani confirmed that the veteran singer suffered a cardiac arrest on April 11 and was undergoing treatment in the hospital’s Emergency Medical Services unit.
Earlier, her granddaughter Zinia Bhosle had shared an update on social media platform X, stating that the singer had been hospitalised due to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection, while requesting privacy for the family.
Widely regarded as one of the most versatile voices in Indian music, Asha Bhosle enjoyed a career spanning over eight decades, recording more than 12,000 songs in multiple languages. Her ability to effortlessly traverse genres—from ghazals to cabaret—cemented her status as a musical legend.
Her collaborations with noted composers such as O. P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman produced timeless classics including “Aao Huzoor Tumko”, “Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko”, and “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja”. She also delivered critically acclaimed performances in songs like “In Aankhon Ki Masti” and “Dil Cheez Kya Hai”.
In later years, she reinvented her musical journey by working with A. R. Rahman on popular tracks such as “Tanha Tanha” and “Rangeela Re”, while also gaining popularity in the Indipop space with hits like “Kabhi To Nazar Milao”.
Over the course of her illustrious career, she received numerous accolades, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, along with two National Film Awards for her work in films like “Umrao Jaan” and “Ijaazat”.
Her demise marks the end of an era in Indian music, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of artists and listeners alike.
