Actor Bhumi Pednekar has urged people across the country to come forward in support of flood-affected families in Assam, saying the scale of devastation has left thousands in urgent need of assistance and deserves greater national attention.
Sharing a series of videos on social media, Pednekar drew attention to the widespread destruction caused by the floods, highlighting the loss of lives, displacement of families and extensive damage to homes and livelihoods. She said many affected residents had lost everything they owned, while entire villages had been washed away and countless animals had perished in the disaster.
“There have been a lot of bad floods in Assam,” the actor said, adding that “whatever they had, everything is finished” for many families. Describing the situation as “very, very heartbreaking”, she appealed to people to donate generously and help those affected.
Calling for collective action, Pednekar compared the current situation with the nationwide support extended to flood-hit regions in Punjab and other states last year. “This time Assam needs us,” she said, stressing that affected communities urgently require food, mattresses, sanitation facilities and evacuation support.
In another video, the actor encouraged people to use social media to amplify the crisis and spread awareness. Referring to the reach of online platforms, she said, “We’ve seen the power of the algorithm,” adding that Assam, along with parts of Gujarat, had witnessed “extreme devastation” and needed immediate public support.
The Bharat Disaster Relief Foundation later thanked Pednekar for backing its Assam Flood Relief Mission. The organisation shared a video showcasing relief materials received from different parts of the country and acknowledged the actor’s role in drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis.
Singer Nilotpal Bora also praised Pednekar and other public figures for supporting Assam’s flood relief efforts. He further urged the actor to highlight the work of non-governmental organisations actively involved in rescue and rehabilitation across the affected districts.
The Office of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also responded to the appeal, thanking Pednekar for standing with flood-affected families during the ongoing crisis.
Assam continues to grapple with severe flooding. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said the death toll had risen to 66 and announced a BJP-led relief initiative to distribute two lakh mekhela-chadors to women and clothing to two lakh children affected by the floods. According to the latest official figures, more than seven lakh people across 12 districts remain affected, with Sivasagar among the worst-hit districts as floodwaters continue to impact hundreds of villages and numerous revenue circles.
