Two Bodies Found Floating in Dehing River in Naharkatiya

Dibrugarh:  A sense of unease gripped residents of Naharkatiya area on Sunday morning after two bodies were spotted floating in the Dehing River near Sasoni, close to Nepali village in Dibrugarh district.

According to local sources, the bodies were seen drifting about ten feet apart, raising alarm among nearby villagers who immediately informed the authorities. The discovery quickly drew a large crowd to the riverbank. Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) soon arrived at the site and secured the area. However, recovery operations were temporarily halted pending the arrival of a magistrate to oversee the official procedures, as required by law.

In a significant development, relatives of missing Digboi-based business tycoon Putul Sarmah, who has been missing since August 12, 2025, reached the spot after hearing of the recovery. Similarly, family members of Bishal Newar from Brahmajan Ambikapur, who went missing on September 26, 2025, also arrived at the site to check for possible identification.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of the deceased, and official recovery had not begun as of the filing of this report. Police sources indicated that the identification process will be carried out in the presence of the magistrate, after which the bodies will be sent for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

The twin discoveries have sparked speculation in the region, particularly given the ongoing investigations into multiple missing-person cases from Upper Assam over the past few months. Further details are awaited as officials continue the recovery and identification process.
