Narcotics worth ₹465 crore destroyed in major Mizoram crackdown

AIZAWL, April 22: A large consignment of narcotics valued at over ₹465 crore was destroyed in Champhai district on Tuesday, marking one of the biggest disposal operations in Mizoram.

Officials said the drugs had been seized by police from multiple locations along the India–Myanmar border between March and October 2025. The destruction was carried out following due clearance from the district court.

The consignment included 35.85 kg of heroin worth ₹71.7 crore, 490.89 kg of methamphetamine valued at ₹392.71 crore, and 4.74 kg of alprazolam estimated at ₹94.8 lakh.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aaquib described the exercise as a major step in the district’s ongoing crackdown on narcotics, noting that drugs worth ₹117 crore were destroyed in Champhai last year, indicating a sharp escalation in enforcement activity.

He emphasised the need for sustained action against trafficking networks and called for greater public awareness to curb substance abuse, particularly among youth. He also urged residents to cooperate with authorities by sharing information on illegal drug operations.

Highlighting Champhai’s emergence as a tourist destination, the official said maintaining law and order remains critical to ensuring a safe environment for visitors.

Police data show that 147 cases were registered under the NDPS Act in 2025, leading to 260 arrests, including 58 Myanmar nationals. Seizures included heroin, methamphetamine, crystal methamphetamine, caffeine and alprazolam.

Enforcement has continued in 2026, with 47 cases registered and 76 arrests made between January 1 and April 20. During this period, authorities seized over 8 kg of heroin, more than 76 kg of methamphetamine and over 10 kg of crystal methamphetamine.
