Shillong, April 27: The Meghalaya Cricket Association will formally inaugurate its indoor cricket academy at Kurkalang on April 28, as part of a broader rollout of indoor stadiums across six northeastern states. The programme will be led virtually by Narendra Modi from Sikkim, signalling a coordinated push to strengthen sports infrastructure in the region.
MCA president James PK Sangma has invited members and affiliates to attend the ceremony at the Kurkalang facility, describing it as a significant milestone for cricket in the state.
The inauguration follows efforts to complete the academy after delays during the previous administration. Sangma said he had sought the intervention of Conrad K Sangma to expedite the project, adding that the facility is now ready for use following the resolution of pending issues.
A key challenge before commissioning the academy was the absence of electricity. Power connectivity was secured within 12 days by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited, allowing final preparations to be completed in time for the launch.
Sangma termed the development a major boost for the state and the Northeast, noting that the Prime Minister’s involvement adds significance to the initiative. He added that internal committees, including a cricket advisory group comprising former players, are already working on plans for training and development activities at the venue.
Developed with support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Kurkalang indoor academy is expected to enhance year-round training by providing a modern, weather-independent facility for cricketers across Meghalaya.
