CRPF Director General GP Singh visited the 34th CRPF Battalion in Nagaon on August 12 to review the ongoing investigation into the August 4 firing incident that left three personnel dead and another injured.
Singh visited the battalion to take stock of the circumstances surrounding the incident and examine the progress of the investigation.
According to preliminary information, ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, a native of Andhra Pradesh, allegedly opened fire inside the 34 Battalion CRPF camp at Katimari in Nagaon district on the morning of August 4, killing two colleagues and injuring another before allegedly taking his own life.
Premabaram was reportedly on main gate duty when he was found without his assigned service weapon. He subsequently allegedly took an INSAS rifle from the camp’s guard room and moved towards the rear of the Quarter Guard.
Police said he first allegedly opened fire on Head Constable (HV/GD) Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who later succumbed to his injuries. He then allegedly shot SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who had arrived at the camp for document verification. Yadav also died at the scene.
Premabaram subsequently allegedly fired at ASI/Mane Govind Sripul of the B/171 Battalion, injuring him. He then entered the B/171 Battalion barrack and allegedly shot himself, dying on the spot.
The deceased have been identified as SI/GD Ramnawal Singh Yadav, Head Constable Vishnu Prasad Baghel and ASI/GD Ballani Premabaram, the alleged shooter. The injured ASI was taken to Dew Care Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
The circumstances that led to the firing remain under investigation. Singh’s visit is expected to focus on the findings of the probe and the factors surrounding the incident.
