Tinsukia Set for Major Infrastructure Push With Rs 250 Crore in Announcements

Tinsukia is set to receive a major infrastructure boost, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing Rs 250 crore for road and drainage works and the construction of a modern auditorium during his visit to the town on Wednesday.

The proposed allocation includes Rs 200 crore for upgrading the town’s road network and drainage system and Rs 50 crore for an auditorium with a capacity of 1,000 people. Sarma also announced plans for an integrated District Commissioner’s Office to accommodate district-level government departments in a single building.

At a programme held at Manab Kalyan Puja Bhawan, the chief minister laid the foundation stones for four projects worth Rs 8 crore funded under the 15th Finance Commission. He also launched ‘Samagra Seva’, a municipal services application developed at a cost of Rs 1.50 crore.

The proposed development programme extends to several other civic facilities. These include a bus terminal, a multi-level parking complex, improvements to Kachujan Stadium, modernisation of the district library and streetlight installation across Tinsukia.

Sarma said the town had played an important role in Assam’s economy as a historic commercial centre, while acknowledging that some aspects of its urban development had not kept pace with other towns. He said further initiatives would be taken to address local infrastructure needs.

The Tinsukia Municipal Board is also carrying out projects to improve public spaces. An allocation of Rs 4.54 crore has been made for the development and beautification of Shaheed Piyoli Phukan Playground, while Rs 2.33 crore has been set aside to rejuvenate Bar Godha Pond. Beautification work is also underway at Mahatma Gandhi Park and Bishnu Rabha Park.

The newly launched Samagra Seva application is intended to make municipal services available digitally and reduce the need for residents to visit government offices in person. Through the platform, users will be able to pay property taxes, apply for trade licences and construction permits, and access sanitation-related services. It will also allow residents to monitor waste collection vehicles in real time.

Looking beyond the immediate infrastructure plans, Sarma said the government would pursue the establishment of a university and an engineering college in Tinsukia, following the construction of a medical college in the district.

He also referred to the BJP’s victories in all Assembly constituencies in Tinsukia district in the last election, saying the government would continue its development efforts. Sarma added that Assam had made progress in improving its industrial climate and maintaining peace and harmony over the past decade.
