Aizawl, April 27: Counting of votes for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections began on Monday morning and is progressing smoothly, with early trends indicating a lead for the ruling Zoram People’s Movement in five wards.
H. Lalthlangliana confirmed that counting commenced at 8 am at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Aizawl. He stated that ZPM candidates were ahead in five wards based on initial rounds, while trends for the remaining constituencies were still awaited.
The civic polls, conducted on April 21, recorded a voter turnout of 62.77 per cent, with around 2.39 lakh eligible voters participating.
A total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, contested the elections. The Zoram People’s Movement, Mizo National Front, and the Indian National Congress fielded 19 candidates each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party nominated 11 candidates.
The results will determine control of the municipal body, which was previously governed by the Mizo National Front following its victory in the 2021 civic polls.
Election authorities said counting is being conducted under strict security arrangements and established procedures to ensure transparency and order. Further updates are expected as the process continues.
