Aizawl, April 27: The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has registered a decisive victory in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, winning 17 of the 19 seats, according to officials.
Vote counting was conducted peacefully at the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner’s office, with the results formally declared by the Mizoram State Election Commission.
The outcome marks a sharp reversal for the Mizo National Front (MNF), which had dominated the 2021 civic polls with 11 seats but was reduced to just one ward in the current election. The Indian National Congress also secured a single seat, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite contesting 11 wards, failed to open its account.
All three major parties—ZPM, MNF and Congress—fielded candidates across all 19 wards. Notably, ZPM candidates won all six seats reserved for women, further strengthening the party’s commanding position in the civic body.
The AMC, constituted in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, comprises 19 wards. The Congress had won the inaugural elections in 2010, while the MNF secured victories in 2015 and 2021.
The 2026 polls, held on April 21, recorded a voter turnout of 62.77 per cent, with approximately 2.39 lakh eligible voters participating.
