Meghalaya Launches Digital Census Drive as Governor Becomes First to Enrol

Shillong, May 1: C. H. Vijayashankar on May 1 became the first individual to enrol as Meghalaya initiated its transition towards a fully digital Census, marking the formal rollout of a technology-driven data collection process.

The Governor completed his registration in the presence of senior officials, signalling the start of the initiative aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and public participation in the enumeration process. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is expected to complete his enrolment later in the day.

Encouraging citizens to take part, Vijayashankar said the shift to a digital platform would enhance accessibility and streamline the Census process. He noted that a data-driven approach would strengthen governance and enable more responsive policy decisions.

Highlighting the importance of reliable data, the Governor said accurate and comprehensive information remains critical for effective planning and implementation of welfare schemes and development programmes.

Officials indicated that the initiative forms part of preparatory measures for the upcoming Census of India 2027. The digital framework is designed to simplify enumeration, reduce manual errors and allow real-time data capture, thereby improving the overall accuracy and reliability of the exercise.

Authorities added that the new system is expected to make participation more convenient for citizens while strengthening the state’s administrative capabilities through better data management.
