Kohima, May 5: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav has called for improved access to welfare schemes, proposing the organisation of block- and village-level camps to issue disability certificates in coordination with the Health and Family Welfare Department.
The suggestion, aimed at enabling persons with disabilities to access government benefits more efficiently, was made during a review meeting with the Social Welfare Department at Lok Bhavan. During the session, Director Tosheli Zhimomi presented updates on key programmes and ongoing initiatives.
The review covered major schemes implemented under the Ministry of Women and Child Development, including Saksham Anganwadi & Poshan 2.0, Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti, with a focus on strengthening nutrition, child protection systems and women’s empowerment. Discussions also extended to initiatives for senior citizens and persons with disabilities under other central ministries, alongside progress in institutional mechanisms such as Child Welfare Committees and Juvenile Justice Boards.
While acknowledging the work undertaken so far, the Governor emphasised the need for stronger implementation, enhanced public awareness and better inter-departmental coordination to ensure effective delivery of welfare services.
In a separate meeting, Yadav reviewed the state’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. Officials outlined potential risks including flash floods, landslides and irregular rainfall patterns. Despite concerns linked to possible El Niño conditions, Nagaland is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall.
Departments presented district-level contingency plans, detailing arrangements such as the establishment of control rooms, deployment of machinery and identification of vulnerable locations. The Public Works Department informed that key highways are under continuous monitoring, with alternative routes identified to maintain connectivity.
The Kohima district administration highlighted preparedness measures including the formation of task forces, traffic management strategies, medical readiness and ensuring the supply of essential commodities. The Governor directed all departments to remain vigilant, ensure prompt emergency response and strengthen information dissemination systems to minimise disruption during the monsoon period.
