Badruddin Ajmal Wins Binnakandi Seat as AIUDF Chief Slams Congress in Assam Political Reconfiguration

Guwahati, May 5: All India United Democratic Front (All India United Democratic Front) president Badruddin Ajmal on May 4 launched a sharp attack on the Congress, asserting that the party has lost its political relevance in Assam and alleging that it has taken on the character of a “Muslim League”.

Speaking on the evolving political scenario in the state, Ajmal said the Congress had been “finished in Assam”, intensifying political rhetoric amid the broader electoral developments.

In the same electoral cycle, Ajmal also secured a victory from the newly created Binnakandi constituency, even as the AIUDF recorded its weakest performance in the Assam Assembly elections, winning only two seats. Ajmal defeated Rejaul Karim Chowdhury of the Assam Jatiya Parishad by a margin of 35,380 votes, polling 1,19,721 votes against 84,341. The opposition candidate was supported by a united alliance, while the ruling bloc’s Asom Gana Parishad nominee Shahab Uddin Majumdar finished third with 20,955 votes.

The result marks Ajmal’s return to the Assam Legislative Assembly after his defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Dhubri, where he lost to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain. He had earlier represented Dhubri in Parliament for three consecutive terms.

Ajmal entered state politics in 2006 after founding the All India United Democratic Front in 2005, winning his first Assembly seat from South Salmara. Since then, the party has maintained a limited but consistent presence in Assam’s political landscape, particularly in constituencies with significant Bengali-speaking Muslim populations.

Binnakandi, located in Hojai district, is among the constituencies created after the 2023 delimitation exercise, and Ajmal’s victory provides the AIUDF with a foothold in the newly formed seat despite its overall decline in the state.
