Imphal, May 5: A 63-year-old woman was found brutally murdered inside her residence at Charhajare in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on the night of May 3, in an incident that has triggered concern among local residents.
The deceased, identified as Pushpa Devi, wife of Nakul Poudel, was reportedly discovered on Sunday morning by locals who visited her home and found her lying in a pool of blood. Initial observations indicated severe head injuries, believed to have been caused by a blunt object. Authorities also noted that gold jewellery, cash and other valuables were missing from the residence, raising suspicion of robbery-linked violence.
Preliminary assessment suggests that unidentified individuals may have entered the house late at night, carried out the killing and fled with stolen items. The victim was living with her mentally challenged younger brother and had no immediate dependants.
Following standard procedure, Gamnom Sapermeina Police conducted an inquest and shifted the body to the morgue at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for post-mortem examination. The autopsy was carried out on Monday in the presence of a magistrate and was fully video-documented before the body was released to family members for the last rites.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union, which described the killing as an “inhuman act” and expressed concern over the safety of elderly individuals living alone. The organisation said the crime likely occurred around 10 pm on May 3 and alleged that valuables were looted after the murder.
The group further stated that the incident has created fear among senior citizens in the area and highlighted concerns over law and order and security for vulnerable residents. It has urged authorities to ensure swift arrests and strengthen protective measures to prevent such crimes in the future.
