Guwahati, May 14: BJP leader Bhupen Kumar Borah on Wednesday criticised remarks made by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi regarding the Assam government’s reported first Cabinet decision linked to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), alleging that the Congress leadership was disconnected from the sentiments of indigenous communities in the state.
Addressing the media in Guwahati, Borah said Gogoi’s recent statement was “totally against the sentiments of indigenous people” and claimed that the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee had failed to understand the concerns of Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and other indigenous groups in Assam.
The BJP leader further alleged that the Congress party’s political strategy was focused on supporting “certain communities” rather than representing the broader interests of the indigenous population of the state.
Defending the move by the government led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Borah described the decision as a “statesmanlike” step rather than a purely political exercise.
The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam over governance issues, identity politics and the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.
