AIUDF Opposes Fresh Survey in Assam, Calls It Unnecessary After NRC Exercise

Guwahati, May 17: The All India United Democratic Front on Sunday opposed any proposal for a fresh socio-economic or citizenship-related survey in Assam, describing such an exercise as unnecessary and an added burden on the public.

Reacting to reports regarding a proposed Strategic or Special Information Survey (SIS) in the state, AIUDF General Secretary Rafiqul Islam said Assam had already undergone a prolonged and extensive verification process through the National Register of Citizens exercise.

Islam questioned the need for another large-scale verification process after the NRC exercise, noting that the earlier process had taken nearly five years and involved widespread public participation and scrutiny.

“The NRC has already been completed after years of verification. There is no need for another survey that will only create inconvenience and trouble for ordinary people,” he said.

He also criticised previous political assertions claiming that millions of illegal immigrants were residing in Assam, pointing out that the final NRC list published in 2019 excluded around 19 lakh applicants, which he said was significantly lower than earlier projections.

Islam further argued that even those excluded from the list remain subject to legal and administrative review procedures, adding that many cases involve individuals whose family members are already included in the NRC.

The remarks from the AIUDF leader come amid ongoing political discussions surrounding possible updates or additional verification measures linked to the NRC process in the state.

Meanwhile, Assam’s electoral rolls are undergoing revision through a Special Revision exercise, with Booth Level Officers carrying out door-to-door verification ahead of upcoming elections.
