Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 21 took oath as a member of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly on the opening day of the newly constituted Assembly session.
The oath was administered by Protem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary, with the Chief Minister choosing to take his oath in Assamese.
At the beginning of the proceedings, Patowary informed members that they were free to take the oath in any recognised language of their choice and could submit their preferred oath copies to the Assembly office.
Following Sarma, legislators from various political parties took oath in multiple languages including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and Sanskrit, reflecting the linguistic diversity represented in the state legislature.
The swearing-in process marked the beginning of the new Assembly session after the NDA secured a decisive victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections. The alliance, comprising the BJP led by Sarma, AGP and BPF, won a total of 102 seats in the 126-member House.
The BJP emerged as the largest party with 82 seats, while the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front secured 10 seats each.
On the opposition side, the Congress won 19 seats. Raijor Dal secured two seats, while AIUDF and Trinamool Congress won two and one seats respectively after contesting independently.
