Section 163 BNSS Imposed at East Jaintia Hills DC Office After Protest Disrupts Official Work

Shillong, May 21: Authorities in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) within the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Khliehriat following a protest that allegedly disrupted administrative functioning.

The order was issued on May 20 by District Magistrate Manish Kumar after a demonstration reportedly took place inside the Deputy Commissioner’s office campus.

According to the administration, members and supporters of the Jaintia Students’ Union, Jaintia National Council and residents from the Daistong area participated in the protest. Officials alleged that demonstrators entered the office building during the agitation, leading to tension and disruption inside the government premises.

The administration stated that the incident affected normal office operations and raised concerns regarding public order and safety. Officials further noted that such situations could result in obstruction of government work, public disturbances, law and order issues, and possible damage to public property.

Following the development, the district administration prohibited gatherings of five or more individuals within the Deputy Commissioner’s office compound with immediate effect. The order has been issued ex parte and will continue until further instructions are released.

The notification also stated that any violation of the order would invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with other relevant provisions of law.
