Itanagar, May 24: Public reaction intensified across Arunachal Pradesh following the arrest of anti-drug campaigner Gumin Mize by Assam Police in connection with a case registered at Bihpuria Police Station, with several groups and individuals demanding a fair probe into the matter.
Mize, president of the Arunachal Pradesh Anti-Drugs Warriors (APADW), had earned recognition across the state for his involvement in anti-narcotics campaigns, youth rehabilitation efforts and awareness initiatives against substance abuse. A resident of East Siang district, he had been actively engaged in identifying alleged drug peddlers and assisting families and young people affected by addiction in different districts of the state.
Police reportedly arrested him from Itanagar earlier this month in connection with a case involving alleged firing at Bihpuria. He was booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
According to police sources, the case centred on allegations relating to the use of firearms. However, his supporters and legal representatives maintained that the incident involved licensed ammunition used for self-defence during an altercation.
The arrest triggered criticism from sections of society in Arunachal Pradesh, with some supporters alleging that vested interests linked to drug networks could be behind the development due to Mize’s continued work against drug abuse and trafficking.
Social activist Amma Bagbi described the arrest as unfortunate and linked it to broader concerns surrounding the influence of narcotics networks. She said she had personally witnessed the welfare work undertaken by Mize and his organisation, adding that many families approached APADW for assistance in helping children overcome addiction.
As support continued to grow, citizens, youth groups and civil society organisations urged authorities to ensure an impartial investigation. Meanwhile, officials stated that the investigation remained in progress.
